Project type: Heritage
Completion Date: 2023
Our Role: Mechanical & Electrical Design
Located at the junction of East Wall and Alexandra Road and adjacent to the Dublin Port Company Headquarters, the Red Brick Building, formerly an electricity transformer substation, is one of the earliest industrial heritage buildings dating from c. 1910. This location represents the place where the sea met the land until the eastward development of the Port began in the late 18th Century. The development refurbishes the Substation and extended the volume with a glazed box. The original seawall was excavated within the Substation footprint so it can be on permanent display below a glass floor. As a multi-functional space, it will host a range of small-scale events such as lectures and seminars, poetry reading, music recital, intimate experimental theatre performance, a venue for The Dockers Preservation Society, pop-up café, or a teaching space.
Energy efficiency and sustainability were clear priorities for this project’s dedication to excellence is exemplified by the BER A3 energy performance rating.
Energy Efficiency:
This has been achieved with the following mechanical and electrical design solutions:
- Heat pump technology heating and cooling for the building.
- High efficiency fan motors with lowest feasible fan power
- Heat Recovery on ventilation systems.
- IES simulation software for detailed energy analysis
- Energy-efficient lighting (LED) utilised throughout
- Solar PV installation
M&E Services Included:
- Hot & Cold-Water services.
- General Power and Emergency Lighting
- General Power and Emergency Lighting
- Fire Alarm, Access Control, Data, etc.
- Solar PV
